INFORME IOTC 01 2014

Indian Ocean Tuna Resources in good health.
PUBLICATION OF THE IOTC SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE REPORT:
INDIAN OCEAN TUNA RESOURCES IN GOOD HEALTH

  • The report of the meeting of the scientific committee of the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission held in Busan ( Korea) is already available on the website of the regional fisheries organization (IOTC): PDF
  • IOTC SCIENTISTS HIGHLIGHT THE GOOD HEALTH OF THE TUNA RESOURCES that capture the freezer tuna fleet in the Indian Ocean, while the three species (yelowfin, skipjack and bigeye) remain in a favourable position which is largely the result of existing management measures that are followed in an exemplary manner by the European and associated purse seine fleet.
  • This is good news for the sector and demonstrates the RESPONSIBILITY OF EUROPEAN OPERATORS IN THE AREA, SUBJECT TO A VERY STRICT CONTROL FRAMEWORK, both by the European Union and by the coastal countries themselves, either within the fisheries agreements in the EU (FPA), or in private agreements.
  • The report of the IOTC Scientific Committee also highlights the commitment of the European tuna sector in IMPROVING THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE SPECIES AND IMPROVING THE SELECTIVITY OF THE PURSE SEINE FISHING GEAR, through the widespread implementation of floating objects preventing the potential entanglement of vulnerable species. This action is the result of the protocols of GOOD FISHING PRACTICES ADOPTED IN THE PRIVATE SPHERE BY SHIP-OWNERS MEMBERS OF ANABAC. These protocols served as models for the development of the IOTC own guidelines in the design and construction of floating objects so that they completely minimize any potential impact on the marine environment.
