ANABAC’s Managing Director, Juan Pablo Rodríguez-Sahagun, within CEPESCA-Europêche’s delegation, met yesterday, July 19th, with the Mr Karmenu Vella, Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, to address Common Fisheries Policy’ external dimension.

The meeting was attended by Europêche members, as well as Stefaan Depypere (DG MARE, Director for International Ocean Governance and Sustainable Fisheries) and Anders Jessen (DG MARE, Head of Unit for Regional Fisheries Management Organisations), among others.

ANABAC reiterated the need to keep reinforcing sustainable fisheries partnership agreements (SFPAs) in Africa, to improve fisheries governance and the fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing there. ANABAC welcomed the Commissioner’s compromise to make every effort to renew the agreement with Guinea Bissau, and also asked to make the best efforts to negotiate and sign a new fisheries protocol with Gabon (suspended), and to reactivate the agreement with Equatorial Guinea (“dormant”).

Regarding RFMOs, ANABAC recalled Commissioner Vella of the commitment to design a specific strategy for the Indian Ocean, as it is of the outermost importance for the European fleet. Thus, adopting more fisheries agreements in the Indian Ocean must be a key part in that strategy, promoting the EU as the leader of fisheries governance and fight against IUU.

ANABAC also manifested its support on Fishing Authorization Regulation (FAR) to Commissioner Vella, however highlighting that this regulation should be applied as a decentralization criterion and should not pose a greater competitive disadvantage than other non-European fleets.

Other questions were also analysed, ranging from EU policies and actions in the fight against IUU fishing, to international governance subjects, such as marine waste management.
