PRESS RELEASE REGARDING THE PAST MEETING OF 4 FEBRUARY OF THE REVIEW COMMITTEE OF THE CODE ON GOOD FISHING PRACTICES ANABAC / OPAGACThe first meeting of the Review Committee for the Code of Good Fishing Practices signed by tuna fisheries associations OPAGAC ANABAC took place on February 4th 2013 at the premises of AZTI-Sukarrieta.
Before scientists of the IEO and AZTI and being present the Secretary General of Fisheries as an observer, the two associations and OPAGAC ANABAC described the experiences carried out by their respective affiliated companies, as well as the difficulties encountered in implementing the contents of the Code of Good Practice.
A series of recommendations were given by the scientists regarding the implementation of this Code of Good Practice by the fleet. The companies themselves have contributed with their opinions and insights from the knowledge that comes from the experience gained by the crews in the implementation of this code.
It was highlighted the proactive spirit of the companies as well as the valuable knowledge gained this year after signing the Code of Practice by ANABAC and OPAGAC. Also, despite the difficulties encountered, it was expressed a general willingness to continue with the implementation of this Code of Good Fishing Practice.
The conclusions reached in this meeting were the following agreements:
• There will be a compilation of suggestions made by the scientists of the IEO and AZTI intended to their incorporation into the Code of Good Practice by the Control Commission.
• A new committee of a purely technical nature and dependant on the Code Revision Commission will be created, to gather experiences and ensure that objectives set by the Code of Practice continue to be followed, taking into account the experiences and obstacles found in the process.
• Assess the need for the preparation of a Strategic Plan for Tuna by scientists, Government and the industry, especially targeting the research needs.
