First major national congress of the Spanish tuna sector

On November 7th and 8th, the Westin Palace Hotel in Madrid will host the First National Tuna Congress: a sustainable success story of internationalisation.

The meeting is promoted by INTERATUN, the first inter-trade organisation set up in the environment of the fishing sector which represents the tuna freezer fleet and the canning industry, will be scientifically coordinated by José Luis Cort, a prestigious researcher from the Instituto Español de Oceanografía (IEO) (the Spanish Institute of Oceanography). Other renowned international scientists, such as Victor Restrepo, representing the International Seafood Sustainability Foundation (ISSF) and Josu Santiago, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Research and Statistics (SCRS) of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT), will participate among others. In addition to the academic presence, representatives of the major companies and business associations in the tuna world, such as INTERATUN, OPAGAC, ANABAC-OPTUC, ANFACO-CECOPESCA and FEICOPESCA, will attend and discuss the current concerns in the tuna fishing and canning industries. In addition, the Government will be represented by senior representatives.

The Spanish tuna sector represents an annual economic volume of almost 1.12 billion euros, it provides 18,600 direct jobs and 43,600 indirect jobs and represents 70% and 67% of the tuna fishing and canning activities in Europe, respectively.
The focus of activity is centred in Galicia and the Basque Country and they together represent 97% of the total.

The Congress will be structured around topics such as the history of tuna fishing and the canning industry, sustainability, the socio-economic influence in Spain, nutritional and health aspects of canned tuna consumption, the internationalisation of the tuna fishing industry in Spain, R&D and the outlook and challenges that arise in the marketing.

The inter-trade tuna organisation INTERATUN is the first inter-trade organisation constituted and formally recognised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and the Environment in the realm of the fishing industry.

It encompasses the shipowners of tuna fishing vessels and the processing industry, with the organisations ANABACOPTUC and OPAGAC representing the shipowners, and ANFACO and FEICOPESCA representing the processing industry.
Since INTERATUN commenced its activity in 2001, this inter-trade organisation has united the efforts of the tuna freezer fleet and the tuna canning industry to defend the common interests of the sector before the different administrations, carrying out promotional activities to highlight the excellent attributes of canned tuna and carrying out sectoral studies.
